FRIDAY 5: SPRING MUST COME

Hurray for Fridays. I don’t know about all of you but this week was a long one for us- and our prolonged Toronto winter has not helped much! But- it can only go up from here, right? It is technically Spring although I am still wearing my cashmere scarves & full winter coat (helps that I love my winter wardrobe but enough is enough)! So for today’s Friday 5 it is all about Spring- because it IS coming!!!!

20130322-200423.jpgThis adorable umbrella. How cute and vibrant is this? So convenient it can be bought online.

20130322-200702.jpg Green. It was never a fav colour of mine in decorating but I must admit it has grown on me. This collection at HomeSense screams spring to me.

20130322-201926.jpg
Bouclair’s new wallpaper line. It’s so cheerful, so colourful, and so cheap. Love the instant impact that patterned wallpaper provides.

20130322-231846.jpg Again with the green with a few fabric selections for a new client. Chevron- still going strong in my books

20130322-231947.jpg Finally, my husband just picked up a new suit and I couldn’t help fall in love with these socks at Harry Rosen. Fresh and vibrant- makes me want to purchase some men’s socks.

Here’s to a speedy start to spring!

NATIONAL HOME SHOW GIVEAWAY

I’m back! Forgive me for the short hiatus- it has been a bit of a whirlwind this past little while with some fun, busy projects- and the regular hilarity of three children under three- but to make up for it I come bearing gifts.

I have three pairs of tickets to give away to the National Home Show, currently open at Exhibition Place. I will again be at the Reno & Decor booth answering design questions on Saturday March 23 from 12-1:30pm so please stop by!

STYLING MAKES ME SMILE

I recently styled two homes for Toronto Home Magazine and boy did these spaces make me smile. It’s a real perk of my job that I get to show up to beautiful spaces, and play all day. We get to take an already awesome space and through accessories and fluffing make it shine. The issue gets published in the Spring and the two homes I styled are truly inspiring interiors.
IMG_9012 IMG_8597I use florals a lot in styling and when the budget does not allow me to go fresh, great looking faux florals work well. These are all from Bouclair Home, one of my first stops in pulling cheerful, colorful accessories for shoots. I love the subtle touch that tiny orange floral adds- must pick up some for around my house!

FRIDAY 5: THINGS I CANNOT WAIT FOR

There’s been lots to be excited about both personally and professionally (more on that note later) so I’m currently in a state of impatience for some of these things to hurry up and get here! So for this Friday 5, a little peek at some of the things I cannot wait for.

1. SATURDAYS HAVE GOTTEN EVEN BETTER with Kate Spade’s new line of products coming this March 2013. As is to be expected with her eponymous brand, it’s bright, feminine and graphic- and more affordable, such a bonus. Images from Kate Spade Saturday Instagram.

2. TARGET COMES TO CANADA really soon and I just can’t wait. The entire shopping experience is a well designed experience- from their store fixtures to their product. And of course their designer lines, like this image above from the Nate Berkus collection are always on trend and friendly on the wallet. Image from Target.com.

3. A NEW VIEW FOR 2013 is in store for the Canning house as it is the year I am FINALLY going to make improvements to my own home. A  black window and door are in the works and I am taking lots of inspiration for Donna Karan’s Manhattan apartment shot by Richard Powers.

4. A TREAT FOR MY SEAT the “Ergo“, designed so that the body slightly moves while sitting to build core muscles intrigues me. I was debating getting an exercise ball to sit on at the office but realized it would be impractical (massive, roll away, I would fall off, etc.) and stumbled upon this little pretty. I might just get it and share a review with you.

5. Coco Rocha- even on her Instagram is so pretty. This monogramed Rebecca Minkoff purse is so me- down to the cobalt colour. Logan Real- please respond to my email and paint a little LC on one? Pretty please? Just can’t wait to add this to my collection.

Happy Friday!

CREATING ORDER IN THE HOME

Creating order- let’s face it, it’s a challenge that everyone faces. I have yet to meet a client that says to me when we meet for the first time, “I love the chaos and the clutter! It is so much fun not being able to find my keys every morning!” Clutter / organization is ALWAYS on the list of pain points when I do initial client assessments. And increasing storage isn’t going to help in creating order, although it is often thought of as the initial solution. Organization and order is a learned behaviour- and systems need to be in place to set people up for success. Let’s also be realistic- the majority of people aren’t like AshLee Frazier  (who by the way, I think is adorable. Actually, all the remaining girls in Sean’s season are adorable. Small TV digression.)

I was recently invited to give a talk on the topic of creating order in the home at a private school in Toronto. I had so many requests for a copy of the presentation I thought I would share the highlights here. I am a big proponent of creating goals that are achievable- so I broke down a top takeaway for each topic. Even if you focus on just one I promise you will see a change in your home, and your life.

Clean Sweet TLC

Remember this show on TLC? I was obsessed with it.

1.DO AN AUDIT it’s remarkable how much stuff can amass in a home that we think we need, but we actually don’t. I am very guilty of hanging on to things for sentimental reasons, or “what if” scenarios (that never really come). Go through each closet, drawer, nook and cranny and be ruthless. In my house if it hasn’t been worn / touched / used for a year it’s gone. The other reality is if you live in a small house or condo (like many of my clients) you simply do not have the space to afford to keep things around that don’t bring VALUE to your life. That is my new measuring stick- does this item bring me value (either in utility, or in its beauty).

Top takeaway: Carve out 15 minutes each week and audit sections of your home. Ensure you actually use / need everything there. Be ruthless and get rid of what you do not need.

2.CONQUER CLOSET INTERIORS I recently did a closet audit with Robin Craig where we went through every single item in my closet and I let her tell me what looked good and what needed to go. She then helped me make outfits out of the items I already own and suggested what I should buy to fill in the gaps. It was AMAZING (and so much fun). What it left me with was a closet that was edited, and helps me get ready FASTER in the morning. No more fumbling through clothing that doesn’t fit. No more guessing if an outfit makes me look frumpy. In addition, we streamlined my wardrobe so that essentially everything matches. Not that I am suggesting that you need a wardrobe that is all the same colour, or lacking in variety- but I was looking for SPEED in getting ready. And ensuring everything coordinates has absolutely helped with that.

Top takeaway: Come up with 5 words to determine your style and stick to those words when you shop. This will assist in seamless dressing in the morning. Post favourite outfits to help inform your style on Pinterest.

3. SORT THE FRONT ENTRY This is the biggest pain point in most homes. We designed the unit above to help assist in this. What I have learned from working with professional organizers is that a shallow drawer for keys / mail / change / cell phone is essential, if possible one drawer for each family member. Limit the number of shoes to 2 per family member at the front door, and everything else gets stored elsewhere. Assign a spot, whether it be a hook, cubby or basket for each person’s bag.

Top takeaway: Place a bag on the front door (make it match your decor!) that permanently stays there to collect errand related things that you don’t want to forget- like library books, things you need to return to stores, mail to go out, etc. Give each family 1 drawer near the front door, 1 bag spot, and limit 2 shoes.

4. DESIGNATE SPOTS Similar to the strategies around the front door, assign spots for essentially everything in your home. Group “like” things together for easy ergonomics. Especially in the kitchen, place related things together. The biggest pain point in my house is currently sippy cups. When you open my kitchen cabinet, they explode in an avalanche or neon green, yellow and Nickelodeon  characters. To combat this, we have made a rule that we only buy one brand, and limit the colour combos- helps with ensuring all lids fit and limits the fights over whose cup is whose. It might sound extreme but I need SPEED and EFFICIENCY with a family of three small kids.

Top takeaway: Assign spots for all items and group according to like items: “like with like”. Give kids bins that they can call their own too.

5.CUSTOMIZE- This is my favourite one as I am such a believer in the value and benefits of custom millwork. The above unit was designed for an active family in North Toronto that needed more space to play, entertain and store. We created this unit with a sliding panel- the TV and the fireplace are housed in this panel which allows the family to use all the space behind for storage. Innovative approaches to customization like this help urban families live large in their small spaces.

Top takeaway: Investing in custom will increase your space as you can use every single inch and design the unit around what you own.

As Ontario residents celebrate Family Day- perhaps there’s a project you want to tackle? I will be doing an audit of my front closet- hopefully finding all the pairs to my kids mittens! Happy Family Day!

FRIDAY 5: IDS 13

Happy Friday! This Friday 5 is coming at the end of the day as I participated in back to back Interior Design Show festivities including the first #Instawalk for Masco Canada and Beige Is Dead. Check out the hash tags #ids13walk for all the images of the participants who walked the floor snapping their favourite pieces from the show.

Here are 5 things that inspired me today at the show:20130125-202350.jpgThis is a beautiful custom carpet designed by Robyn Waffle for Modallion, yetanother amazing Ryerson Fashion grad.
20130125-202439.jpgCeaserstone created this rock garden, a beautiful visual pause and clever use of this material.
20130125-202455.jpgThese are my friend Nyla Free‘s shoes. Snapped this while she wasn’t looking!
20130125-202518.jpgA fun splash of colour at the Para Paint booth.
20130125-202600.jpgAnd lastly from Masco, I love the versatility in this sink design- many different configurations for a vessel.

The Interior Design Show is this weekend at the Metro Toronto Convention Center and is full of I sliding treats. The Ikea booth is one not to miss, and I also loved what Oakville retailer Cocoon did with their booth.

And I’m excited to announce the winner of my IDS ticket giveaway! I drew the winner the old fashioned way by writing down all the entires and drawing from a hat- and the winner is…. Angie! Congrats to you and thanks to all who entered. Happy Toronto Design Week!

A COZY WINTER VACATION AT VIAMEDE

Winters in Canada can be frighteningly cold, but they can also be incredibly pretty. This weekend our family got to experience some of this prettiness at the Viamede Resort in the Kawartha Lakes region of Ontario.

20130121-172444.jpgMy winter view from our cottage.

On an overcast Saturday morning we packed up our three kids and drove 2 hours north east with the promise of a quiet cottage, cozy fires and deer. And deer we got:

20130121-173257.jpg I must admit this city girl was excited to get close to these adorable animals. The resort feeds the deer twice a day and invites guests to help. Adults and kids alike went gaga over the deer:
20130121-221949.jpg20130121-221959.jpg In the winter, the resort offers activities like snowshoeing, nature walks and artists workshops. Or if you’d prefer to hibernate they have an onsite spa, small fitness center and indoor hot tub. I personally could have sat in front of this all day:

20130121-180109.jpg My favourite thing about the cozy 3 bedroom cottage our family stayed in was the wood burning fireplace. Although I probably should have googled how to start a fire- I learned after a pathetic 60 minutes and multiple burned pages of my lined notebook later that you can’t just put a match on a log and expect a fire to happen. Lesson learned! I was pretty proud of my not so little flame after all that effort.

The resort certainly has more to offer in the summer by way of activities- but if you’re looking for a quiet, relaxing escape from the hectic buzz of the city this place won’t disappoint. The staff were so friendly (shout out to Kathleen who was a big hit with my children), the food delicious- options of pub fare near the water in the boat house and more formal dining in the main dining room (we even enjoyed late night snacks delivered to our room), and our cottage was very spacious for our family of 5. From a design point of view the cottage decor was a little more shabby than chic, but it was clean and comfortable. The cottages also have everything you need should you want to hibernate even more and bring your own food- coffee maker, oven, fridge and utensils make it simple to cook yourself. Grab a movie or a board game from the front desk, cozy up with a book from the lending library, and enjoy some relaxation in the pristine wilderness. It would make for a lovely romantic getaway or a weekend of family fun.

Special thanks to Viamede General Manager Ben Sämann and Valerie Stachurski for the kind invitation up. Here’s more of what we enjoyed during our winter escape.

We hope to visit again soon!

FRIDAY 5

I honestly cannot believe it’s Friday- this week flew by faster than Don Draper’s ability to finish off a bottle of bourbon.

This week was spent working on #thekitreveal, finishing off two bathroom renovations in Toronto, and shopping for a little girl’s room in Forest Hill. It was also spent doing a few design consultations and signing new business. It’s been a great start to 2013, but feeling rather pooped. Which is why this resonates with me today:

20130118-181944.jpg I’ve recently been introduced to the fun website Fresh Words Market. Some stylish, optimistic typography at very reasonable prices. Love this message of choosing happiness- because it really is a choice sometimes. Speaking of choice:

20130118-182622.jpg How lovely are these colourful options from Canadian jewelry company Ellie Mae. I was introduced to all this arm candy and more at the #SpringFever media preview this week at The Hazelton Hotel in Toronto. Which leads me to this:

20130118-183250.jpg The Hazelton Hotel, designed by the renowned Yabu Pushelberg is one inspiring, luxurious space. User experience and all details are beautiful down to the custom cleaning product they sell in their spa. Don’t even want to know what it costs but it sure smelled amazing. In the spirit of following my nose:

20130118-185249.jpg Instagram has introduced me to some amazing, talented, super stylish folks. The Pink Diary is one such individual as evidenced by their image above. Lastly:

20130118-185547.jpg This is me super happy with the progress on this bathroom we designed in Toronto. We’re renovating and decorating two bathrooms for this busy family- can’t wait to share more with you soon.

Happy Friday everyone!!!

FRIDAY 5

Welcome to the Friday 5- a new weekly post that will feature my roundup of things that inspire me, make me smile, bring me joy.

Starting with this:

20130111-091928.jpg I was in the DeSerres store at Yonge and 16th picking up supplies for a painting I am having a client’s child make for their new bathroom. Let me tell you, this space is gorgeous. Graphic, streamlined, glossy, so much attention to detail in the millwork and fixtures. Could have spent all day in there. Who knew organized art supplies could be so pleasing to the eye. My son thinks so too:

20130111-122829.jpg

20130111-123043.jpg We are starting to pull accessories for #thekitreveal and these little organic accessories could be quite darling on a tabletop somewhere. Found at the treasure trove that is Decorum on Yonge Street in Rosedale.

20130111-160950.jpgHow beautiful is this paintings by Vancouver artist Zoe Pawlak. I love the vibrant colours and the saturated hues. Speaking of hues:

20130111-160417.jpgHello red lipstick! I have recently stumbled upon some fabulous fashion bloggers and Katelyn from The Skinny Blonde Girl is one of them. Her outfits are so effortless and I must say this girl has mastered the art of taking a good iPhone picture of herself (a difficult task I have learned!).

Happy weekend to all, hope you are spending it in restful and inspiring ways!

ORANGE ON MY MIND

Lately orange has been on my mind- it’s not a colour I typically gravitate towards in decorating or for my wardrobe. But for some reason (leftover influence of the Tangerine Tango talk of 2012?) orange has made an appearance.

Take this hat, for example:

20130108-112748.jpg

Purchased very spontaneously for $9.99 at Joe Fresh (love Joe) on my way to a meeting for #thekitreveal the orange pop against a soft camel body is so contemporary. It reminds me of this:

20130108-143744.jpg

Hermes orange is so easy on the eyes. Love this recent hit of Vitamin C over at H&H. So fresh!

And today, I share my thoughts on orange, animal prints and other things I think will be strong trends in 2013 over at Style At Home- thanks Lauren McPhillips for allowing me to talk about orange, and many other things, in this article.

Here’s to orange continuing to pop up in 2013 :)
