SEEING RED

Red has been popping up in my visual world everywhere, with Valentines Day candy still in my purse and inspiration images from recent projects still on my desk. The same way red lipstick can add some sass to an otherwise everyday outfit, a red lacquered box or upholstered piece can vamp up a room in the right context. So today I thought I’d share a few radiant red items I have seen in my journeys.

A few shots of red from my summer adventure in Atlanta: a sign in one of the many amazing antique markets, a collection of signs in the Coke museum, and some fabulous upholstered chairs in yet another market. Their antique markets are reason enough to visit Atlanta- can’t wait to go back.

Pops of red from a room I styled on For Rent season 4 (super economic options from Bouclair Home).

Finally, a little Rebecca Minkoff to round out the collection. Ok, so my purse is probably closer to Tangerine Tango but it’s a chic way to end this post. Happy Saturday everyone!

HOW TO SURVIVE THE INTERIOR DESIGN SHOW

So… this post is a little tardy, but being that I’m now 30 weeks pregnant (when did that happen?) sleeping has taken precedence over blogging. Instead of a round-up of my IDS12 favourites, I thought I’d offer a few survival tips to IDS from this first time exhibitor (still can’t believe that happened too).

TIP #1: HIRE AN AMAZING ASSISTANT

Meet my assistant Lara Cupido, without whom I would surely be a grumpier designer (and poorly accessorized- that is her fantastic necklace I am wearing above, this girl has great taste). Lara has worked with me through 2 seasons of production design on For Rent, worked very hard through major client installations and has schooled me on the best restaurants in the city (look up foodie in the dictionary and it’s her face there). Inside and out, she’s one special gem and I’m so happy to have her as part of my team. (Photo by Arnal Photography).

TIP #2: WEAR SENSIBLE FOOTWEAR

As much as I love my heels, the Interior Design Show is one massive exhibit to work your way through. Save the heels for the opening night party, opt for flate for the rest of the show- above I am wearing sensible Stuart Weitzman flats during an interview with House and Home. (Photo by Sharyn Smith)

TIP #3: FIND A COMFY SEAT

Several hundred people rested their tootsies on this Pavia chaise lounge from BoConcept in my National Bank hub. Unless instructed otherwise, the booths at IDS are meant to be interactive. It’s a great venue to try out new products so do take it easy and soak in all the design eye candy. (Photo by Arnal Photography)

TIP #4: STAY HYDRATED  I don’t have any secret inside tips on where to get free water at the show- otherwise I would have taken more advantage! But one cannot live on coffee alone, so make sure to get your H20 fix too.

TIP #5: FINISH OFF THE SHOW WITH GREAT FRIENDS

The Canadian Design Blogger Meetup was the Saturday night of IDS- and it was so lovely to catch up with colleagues at Brasaii.

Here I am with fellow designers Jennifer Brouwer and Lisa Ferguson; with Dabble Mag divas Christine Da Costa and Nyla Free; and with blogger extraordinare Christine Dovey of Bijou and Boheme.

TIP #6: CAPTURE IT ALL WITH A GREAT PHOTOGRAPHER

Special thanks to Larry Arnal of Arnal Photography for capturing my work at the National Bank hub. Here are a few of my favourite shots:

And for a round-up for the best of IDS12, take a peek at what fellow bloggers thought of the show: Judtih Mackin for HGTV here, Tim of Design Maze here, Jennifer Flores of Rambling Renovators here & Pam at Cherish Toronto here.

IDS12: TRADE DAY

In my 5 years of designing spaces I have learned that experience is invaluable. There is only so much that school and a text book can teach you. Understanding your own aesthetic as a designer, and learning how to problem solve, deal with conflict and communicate effectively is all learned through sweat (and lots of it).

This is why I love trade day at the Interior Design Show. This year I attended several workshops that were truly invigorating (helpful as I needed the wake up Friday morning after wearing these all Thursday evening at the IDS party).

BLOGPODIUM

That’s me and the fab Nyla Free. Photo by Jason Hudson at BlogPodium 2012.

BlogPodium is a new platform that connects design & lifestyle bloggers, marketers, and the design community through a series of conferences. I thought this very first conference was a great gathering of media mavens- and here is what I took away from it:

YOUR BLOG MUST BE YOU: Speakers Kimberley Seldon and Kate Moore were adamant that your blog should be a reflection of YOU- your talents, your creative viewpoint, your voice. For Kimberley it’s not enough to say that something is “super cute” or “so awesome” (I was pretty much fist pumping when she said this, I completely agree that the vernacular of “cute and awesome” is so overused on design blogs particularly), and Kate agreed that if you want to be on a show like CityLine, you’ve got to show her something unique. Stay on point, and on message. And if you’re an Interior Designer Kimberley adds, you best be blogging about your own work!

EDIT, EDIT, EDIT: Speaker Margot Austin, who has been in the magazine world for 20 years, appreciates a well edited collection- a filter of beautiful things. The panel all agreed that there should be thought given into what you post- and that not all parts of your life may be true to the brand of your blog. Thought must be given to the approach and direction you want your blog (and this goes for all social media presence as well) to take.

WANT TO GROW YOUR BLOG: My lovely friend Jen Flores shared that if you want your blog to grow, consider a blog redesign, use pinterest and utilize guest posting. She also suggests updating your blog at least 3 times a week. Although she’s too humble to admit it, this woman is a blogging force to be reckoned with. 30,000 unique visitors and 100,000 page views monthly!!!

Blogging has been a great personal outlet for me and has been helpful in creating a brand for my business- and the people I have met in the blogging community are just fantastic. Some of the nicest and most encouraging creative minds.

BANKING ON DESIGN: ROBERT RUSCIO

Robert Ruscio, retail space designer, and designer of National Bank’s new Toronto flagship, offered his thoughts on the design of banks as a whole and the process his firm took towards the new National Bank flagship. The renderings of the new bank location are pretty gorgeous and let me tell you, the space certainly makes banking look way more fun- and way more stylish of an experience. I’m looking forward to some of the ways his firm has integrated the logo in more conceptual applications and the use of media in the environment.

Lastly, he shared that for every client, they create a list of words (kind of like core values) that inform the design and each design decision. Throughout the design process his design team are very cognizant  of these key words- and they ensure the final design does not stray from this. I’m applying this to my design practice too- just came up with my list for a bedroom project I’ve got going on and it’s proving very beneficial to the process of design.

HOW DESIGNERS LEAVE MONEY ON THE TABLE: KIMBERLEY SELDON & JOANNA GOODMAN

In this workshop aimed at Interior Design professionals, Kimberley and Au Lit Fine Linens owner Joanna schooled me on how to establish great supplier relationships. Kimberley reminded me that an A team of suppliers is essential for any design professional and that nurturing this team will make my job easier. And as Joanna so aptly noted- if you can’t be an expert in everything, make sure you work with those who are. And Joanna knows her sheets- Au Lit is the Holt Renfrew of bedding, and a favourite shop of mine in Toronto. She reminded me that the job of an Interior Designer is to guide clients on how to live the best way possible, not just look the best. This includes the BEST quality sleep. I am buying a featherbed as a result of this workshop, her passion for bedding is totally inspiring!

MASTER CLASS: WILLIAM YEOWARD

William Yeoward, UK based textile, furniture and crystal master was an absolute joy to listen to. Witty, charming, and all around adorable he shared some stunning photographs of his home, the company showcase cottage, and his latest collection of textiles. The process of how a designer goes from concept to actualization has been particularly intriguing to me as of late- and on this topic William shared that one should stick with a colour scheme from an environment you feel drawn to (ie woods, grasses, flowers, fruit, garden, etc) and I love the quote: “Where I’ve come from, what I’m about, where I live. This informs my design.”

It was very much a satisfying day of design inspiration, and it feels great to already be applying many of the above principles in my design practice.

IDS12: OPENING NIGHT PARTY

It’s been a fun whirlwind these past 2 days- here’s a little recap of the Interior Design Show opening night party and the unveiling of my design of the National Bank Hub for the How Do You Live exhibit.

Furnished by BoConcept, I created a multifunctional space for the modern family. When you visit the space you’ll notice a home office, room for toys and lots of concealed storage to keep the space feeling spacious. Using the National Bank colours of red, black and white I was thrilled to outfit this small space. More detail shots of the space to come : )

Thanks to Larry from Arnal Photography for the great pics below from the opening party:

Photo 1&2: The lovely Allen Chan, Sharyn Smith and Glen Peloso paid me a visit. Photo 3: Showing Jen Wilson some of the smart storage solutions from BoConcept. Photo 4: With the lovely Sharyn Smith, the fantastic lady of Eventful PR who I’m so happy to be working with. It’s been a great start to #IDS12!

PLAYING CATCH UP- JERGENS OVERNIGHT FIX REVEAL

It has been a crazy last few weeks in the world of Lisa Canning Interiors- having just wrapped Season 5 of For Rent in my gig as the production designer plus the usual load of client work and my work over at Dabble Magazine. But now (sigh of relief) life is getting back to a more relaxed pace and I can (finally) get back to my love of blogging.

I am going to play a bit of catch up starting with the fantastic experience that was the Jergens Overnight Fix (read a bit of the background here). This 24-hour makeover for a Toronto YWCA was an amazing experience to be a part of, mainly because of the dedication, enthusiasm and tireless efforts of the 30+ volunteers who worked in shifts around the clock. There was a great camaraderie and sense of purpose among the team of mostly female, non-renovation experienced volunteers (even at 3am when delirium started to sink in for some!).

I described it to the media who attended in the morning as a labour of love- and that is so much what it was. The reveal reminded me why I love my job and my philosophy behind designing great spaces- to improve the quality of life of the people who use it.

Special thanks again to Arren Williams for connecting me to this project, Apex PR for their support and innovation towards PR, Jergens for donating the funds to make this happen, and to my partner in overnight crime contractor Christian Pavey. And much thanks to all the media who attended the breakfast and for their great posts on the event including Jennifer Flores of Rambling Renovators, Alex from Chick Advisor, Caitlin Kenny of Flare, & Elaine Song from Style At Home. Here’s a look at how it happened:

Here’s the beginning of our Allure flooring installation from The Home Depot. Christian and the volunteers adhered a contrast white strip to create some detail on the floor. This vinyl product is easy to clean and maintain, perfect for this high traffic space.

Storage became a bit of an issue while we laid the floors- here’s a peek at the hallways and the cube van outside the YWCA.

Here with Christian, still smiling at 1am.

And on to the reveal (photos courtesy of Jen from Rambling Renovators)…

And here we are at 9am, after our CP24 feature:

And a little Pure Design reunion with a visit by Julia Black of Chatelaine!

And for those of your who are curious where everything came from in this 24 Hour makeover, here is my source guide. It is amazing what can be accomplished with hard work and a lot of love in an Overnight Fix! I feel truly blessed to have been involved in this project.

I AM A BLOGGER-SLACKER

I must confess- I am a blogger slacker. As much as I love my blog, I find there are always periods where other things take precedence. I think it’s the perfectionist in me that gets in the way from more frequent updates. The same way I fuss over how many inches to move a picture on a wall, or fluff the same pillow 5 times, I edit my posts. I am concerned with writing thoughtful, quality posts. To me, quality posts are ones that educate, inform, and give a behind the scenes look at the things my business does. And when I’m busy, my brain is not always inclined to writing eloquent posts of substance.

So today I am going to play catch up:

At the end of February two great projects began with fantastic clients. The above photo is a before shot from one of them- my loft project in the Toronto Beaches. It has soaring windows and ceilings but very 905 finishes (no offense to those of you in the 905 area code, but this tile choice is far too boring for this space).

So we have removed the offensive tile and built a new more contemporary mantle.

And we threw up a little barn board. I am dying to share the finished pics but I will leave you in suspense. It is breathtaking. This project is currently in the home stretch stage- can’t wait to style it for photos.

Speaking of style- Dabble is the newest on-line style fix. It’s an on-line magazine created by the fabulous Kimberley Seldon. I’m so thrilled to be a contributor to this publication- here I am with fellow design contributors Christine De Costa and Nyla Free.

I must share meeting Kimberley for the first time was similar to how I felt when I met Marilyn Denis for the first time. I grew up watching CityLine religiously, and would watch with bright eyes as these stylemakers would showcase their beautiful spaces. Now I am friendly with many of them- totally surreal.

In order to write about great design I have to shop the market- and an event I never miss in Toronto is the One of A Kind Show. Above is a fantastic bag by Brooklyn based Arza Design. I took home yet another Hilary Cosgrove owl for my son, and an owl music box toy to add to our now growing nest by mimi.

Lastly, I’m so thrilled to be working on a new project: Tori’s Bakeshop- a vegan, refined sugar free, gluten free, organic bakery in Toronto’s Beaches. In keeping with the philosophy of the bakery, the design and design process will be as natural as possible- and I’ll be sharig the whole process on my blog and on twitter. Very clever hashtag pending.

IDS REPORT: OPTIMISM & SYNERGY

It has been a busy week post IDS- largely because I have been so inspired by my experience this year. I feel rejuvenated, enlightened, and downright optimistic thanks to my interactions at the show, and I’d like to share why. Here are my top highlights:

#1. The Power of Connections- Tweet Up Dinner: At this fantastic dinner many of us who have only tweeted or known of each other got to connect in real life. I had the opportunity to hear how the lovely Michelle of Holley & Gill got blogging and picked the brain of the tech savvy Kelly Fallis.

That’s me with the delightful Holley&Gil blogger Michelle (thanks Lisa Ferguson for the lovely photo), me with the dapper Arren Williams, my delicious meal at Nota Bene and a room full of amazing design enthusiasts.

#2. Learning from Masters: Notes from the VIP lounge: Something I have learned in the last few years of running my business is that if you don’t ASK you don’t grow. My business completely changed when I hired a business coach and asked Meredith Heron to mentor me over a cup of coffee. I’ve also learned that people are happy to share their successes and failures even if you don’t know them personally- and with the power of twitter, it’s easier to connect with these professionals. Thus I did a lot of asking this year at IDS. I picked the brain of Lisa Ferguson (who recommended an app for my new iphone that will change the way I do business!), and got to talk about the road to success with the gorgeous Kelly Deck. I will admit I was totally starstruck when I met Kelly, and must report she is as lovely and charming in person as she is on her show Take It Outside.

A blurry shot of Kelly Deck!

#3. A warm embrace of colour: There was a lot of boldness on the floor- saturated hues and bright colours. However, I didn’t see much Honeysuckle- but got to see lots of lime, purple, aqua, cobalt, orange- lots of bright, happy colours.

Gorgeous rugs by modern weave

Deliciously colourful Style At Home booth with a painted floor

Concept space by the Ta Trung siblings

I want this piece by Alanna Cavanagh

A lively mix of oranges in the Richardson concept space

#4. An energetic mix of pattern: 2011 is all about mixing and layering patterns. I am in love with this approach to decorating- when done well it can look dynamic and feisty- I love it.

Love the patterned wallpaper with subdued art at Frini.

Incredible high fashion tiles from Edgewater.

Lovely mix of patterns unified in a colour palette of blue and white.

Stay tuned for Part 2!

IDS PREVIEW

This morning I had to miss the press preview for this weekend’s Interior Design Show due to a family commitment. But to give you a sneak peek of what is to come (it’s going to be a brilliant show) please hop on over to see coverage by Jennifer Wilson from yourhome.ca, Jennifer Flores of Rambling Renovators who is hosting Pecha Kucha on Friday, and Arren Williams who will be hosting his own talk on Sunday.

Must see for me: Alfred Sung furniture, the Sibling Revelry exhibit, and the Panton chairs for Casey House. This weekend is going to be packed with design goodness- cannot wait.

WEEKEND INSPIRATIONS

A few things that have inspired me this rainy Saturday:

The entry of Tamara Robbins Griffith‘s loft, as featured in Samantha Pynn’s National Post article.

John and Juli‘s gorgeous home tour (above their store mjolk) on the HGTV.ca blog. (How cute are they!)

These rugs from Urban Barn. I love them both but will ultimately have to pick one. Tough choice. Happy weekend everyone!

Magazine styling demystified with Margot Austin

The other day (before the whirlwind of having my second child!) I had the pleasure of running into Margot Austin (Senior Design Editor of Style At Home magazine) on Queen Street W. She was shopping for ribbon at Mokuba, I was buying chairs for a client at Design Republic. As I was getting ready to style two spaces for photoshoots the next day, I had to pick this editor’s brain on the science that goes into styling a space for print. (And there is a science).

What she shared with me was gold: use a mix of textures, a bit of old and new, and don’t overdue it. She empathized that sometimes it’s a scramble on shoot day for the perfect accessory, and reminded me that everything looks different through a camera lens.

For more of her insights on styling for magazines, check out her post on the Style At Home blog. It’s a good one.
